Competition: Royale Belge, Brussels

14 January 2020. Caruso St John Architects, working in collaboration with Bovenbouw Architecten, have won the competition to convert the former headquarters of the Royale Belge insurance company into a 42,000m2 mixed-use complex. The existing 1970s building, set in parkland to the south east of the centre of Brussels, has been unoccupied since 2017. The scheme includes apartments, offices, coworking and conference facilities along with a hotel and fitness centre. It sets out to retain as much of the existing building as possible with a series of interventions to open up the lower floors. The project is planned to complete in 2023.
