Caruso St John Architects

2015–2015
Location: Rome, IT
Client: Roma Capitale
Project Status: Competition

Caruso St John were finalists in this competition for housing in the Flaminio district in Rome. The large site in the west of the city was formerly military barracks and is located close to Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI. The competition was organised by the City, and required a masterplan for the development of the site in phases, including 350 apartments for both rent and private sale. The design proposed a dense development that drew specifically on the qualities of central Rome, with its dense network of streets, piazzas and private shared courts and gardens. Some existing buildings are retained and the new buildings are varied in their height and scale, to give the quarter some of the qualities of a city that has grown up over a period of time.
